Ilhyock Shim was appointed as Head of Economics for the Americas at the BIS Americas Office in January 2025. He joined the BIS in 2004 as economist at headquarters in Basel. Since then, he has held various positions in the Monetary and Economic Department in Basel, Hong Kong SAR and Mexico City. In 2024, he was Head of Financial Systems and Regulation in Basel. From 2019 to 2023, he was Head of Economics and Financial Markets for Asia and the Pacific (EFMAP) in Hong Kong. In 2018, he worked at the BIS headquarters in Basel as Special Adviser on International Financial Stability Policy. From 2007 to early 2018, he was principal economist at the EFMAP unit in Hong Kong. He began his career in 1996 as deputy director in the Korean government. He also worked at the Korean Ministry of Finance and Economy as deputy director in charge of deposit insurance and financial sector restructuring, and was an adviser at the G20 Affairs Office of the Bank of Korea. He holds a BA and an MA in economics from Seoul National University and a PhD in economics from Stanford University.
