Organisation and governance

The Central Bank Governance Group (CBGG) comprises Governors from nine BIS member central banks as standing members. It is chaired by Lesetja Kganyago, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank. The Chair may invite additional governors to join CBGG discussions as guests when the topic is of particular relevance or interest to them. The Chair is chosen from among the members of the CBGG by its members. The Chair provides annual reports on the activities of the Governance Group to all BIS member central banks at the All Governors’ Meeting. The CBGG Secretariat is hosted and supported by the BIS in Basel.

Central Bank Governance Network

The work of the CBGG is supported and complemented by that of the Central Bank Governance Network (CBGN), which the BIS established in 1999 as an informal mechanism to facilitate knowledge-sharing on matters of central bank governance. Currently 56 BIS member central banks are represented on the Network. The Network supports information gathering and dissemination among BIS member central banks on related topics. Specialised surveys are conducted through Network members as needed to inform CBGG discussions or provide comparisons across jurisdictions on matters of governance and institutional design.
