Organisation and governance

The Markets Committee is a forum in which central bank officials discuss current market conditions, market functioning and central bank operations. Comprising senior officials from 27 central banks, it is chaired by John C. Williams, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

Markets Committee Chair

The Chairperson, appointed by the GEM for a renewable three-year term, oversees the MC’s work to ensure its mandate is fulfilled. Core responsibilities include chairing meetings, guiding the work programme, reporting to the GEM, and serving as the MC’s principal external representative.

Markets Committee Secretariat

Staffed by the BIS, the MC Secretariat supports the Committee, Chairperson, and working groups by coordinating Committee meetings and workshops, ensuring efficient information flow, maintaining records, and managing correspondence. It also facilitates collaboration with external institutions and oversees the administration of MC-related resources. The Head of Secretariat directs its work and assists the Chairperson.

The Committee normally meets on the occasion of the bimonthly meetings of Governors of BIS member central banks. There are no public releases of the meeting agendas or discussions.

The Chair reports to the Global Economy Meeting, which comprises a group of 31 BIS member central bank Governors.
