Hongyan Zhao joined the BIS in 2024. Prior to that, she worked as a senior economist at ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO), and as an economist (Economist Program) at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Her research and policy analyses focus on topics including international trade, global supply chains, commodity prices and external adjustment. She holds a PhD in economics and an MA in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. Additionally, she earned an MA in economics and BAs in international studies and economics from Peking University.
