We offer two primary programmes - the BIS Graduate and PhD Fellowship Programme - for professionals in the early stages of their career to gain experience at an international financial institution. Selected candidates work with leading professionals in a highly rewarding, international work environment that gives them exposure to a wide range of fields, including economic research and analysis, banking services, technology and more.
Opportunities for the BIS Graduate Programme are usually advertised in spring, the ones for the BIS PhD Fellowship Programme at the end of summer. All openings will be listed under current vacancies as they become available.
BIS Graduate Programme
The BIS Graduate Programme gives recent and soon-to-be graduates the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals from around the world in a unique environment in Basel, Switzerland.
The programme helps graduates to acquire valuable work experience in areas such as monetary policy, economics, financial stability, banking, risk management, technology, cyber-security and data science. The BIS's modest size makes it easy to collaborate and exchange ideas with colleagues in different units and managers at different levels.

You will receive a contract for up to 11 months (non-renewable) to work at the BIS's headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. You will receive a competitive salary net of Swiss income tax, health insurance, return travel and accommodation in Basel.

As a bank for central banks, the BIS occupies a unique position as a platform for international financial cooperation among monetary and financial authorities, playing a valuable part in supporting the central banking and financial supervisory community.
BIS PhD Fellowship Programme
The Bank for International Settlements invites applications from students who are currently enrolled in a PhD programme in economics, finance or related fields and who wish to develop a research project at the BIS.
The PhD Fellowship programme helps you acquire practical experience in supporting central banks and other financial authorities and in contributing to high-level meetings and BIS publications.
Candidates must be enrolled in a PhD programme in economics, finance or related fields with an:
- Excellent knowledge of financial and monetary economics, with specialisation in topics relevant to the BIS research agenda
- Experience in conducting research in relevant fields
- Ability to apply tools used in economic analysis to a range of topics
Successful candidates will be invited to the BIS's MED for a period ranging from three to 11 months.
