Statistical commentary on provisional locational and consolidated banking statistics at end-June 2009 (PDF, 14 pages, 79 kb)

Banks' external claims continued to decline in the second quarter of 2009, but at a slower pace, by 1.1% ($0.3 trillion) - to $30.4 trillion. While external claims on the non-bank sector increased for the first time since the third quarter of 2008 - by 0.5 % - the overall decrease in international banking activity during the quarter reflected a further contraction in interbank claims. Total consolidated international claims stabilised in the second quarter of 2009 after four quarters of consecutive declines. Local claims in local currencies were also unchanged at constant exchange rates.

Data for the second quarter of 2009 are provisional. Final data, with a detailed analysis of the recent trends, will be published in the forthcoming BIS Quarterly Review to be released on 7 December 2009.
