These four interactive graphs are being published to help readers explore some of the data used in the June 2021 edition of the BIS Quarterly Review. They will not be updated. To access the data underlying the graphs, click here.
Interactive graph 1
Non-financial corporates' (NFCs') international debt
Click on the play button to see evolution over time. Click on the regions to select which are displayed: advanced economy groups (euro area, European excluding euro area, and other advanced economies), emerging market economy groups (Africa, Asia/Pacific, emerging Europe, and Latin America) and offshore centres (OFC). Country groupings follow BIS classifications. This graph is based on end-of-year data for amounts outstanding published by the BIS, interpolated when the "play" feature is activated for visual effect.
Interactive graph 2
NFCs' international debt securities, by issuance location
Net issuance (flows, equal to gross issuance minus repayments) and amounts outstanding (stocks) issued from onshore and offshore locations. Onshore refers to debt issued from the country of headquarters of the NFC parent. Offshore refers to debt issued by affiliates located outside the country of headquarters. Click on items in the legend to select which are displayed. Use the dropdown menu to select specific nationalities or country groups. Hover over the graph for further information.
Interactive graph 3
Affiliate sector structure in international debt securities
Excludes issuance by the government and international organisations. Click on dropdown menu to select a nationality or country group. The ultimate sector corresponds to the sector of the parent, headquartered in the selected country or country group. The immediate sector corresponds to the sector of the affiliate that has issued the debt and that could be located in another country or country group. Hovering over a segment highlights it.
Interactive graph 4
Where do NFCs issue offshore?
Issuance is offshore if it is done through affiliates located outside the country of headquarters of the NFC parent. Click on the tabs to select country groups of the NFC nationality to be displayed in the x-axis (top offshore locations fixed in the y-axis). Click on the play button to see evolution over time. Hover over the graph for further information.
