Project Polaris, from the BIS Innovation Hub Nordic Centre, is focused on designing secure and resilient CBDC systems, online and offline. Over several workstreams, Project Polaris will provide central banks with the essential information needed to inform decision-making, architecture, design, implementation planning and investments. It will also address long-term change and operational considerations.
Security and resilience are utmost important for payment systems, and offline payment could be an important strategy for achieving such objectives. Project Polaris aims to provide practical tools to support central banks in these areas.
The Polaris workstream roadmap includes:
- A handbook for offline payments with CBDC
- A security and resilience framework for CBDC systems
- Closing the CBDC cyber-threat modelling gaps
- A high-level design guide for offline payment
