The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) today announced that Gaston Gelos has been appointed as Deputy Head of the Monetary and Economic Department (MED) and Head of Financial Stability Policy, effective 1 September 2023. Mr Gelos will join the BIS from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where he serves as Assistant Director in the Western Hemisphere Department and Mission Chief for Mexico.

Mr Gelos, who joined the IMF in 1998, was previously the head of the Monetary and Macroprudential Policies Division in the Monetary and Capital Markets Department, leading research, policy and technical assistance work on monetary and macroprudential policies. He also led the Global Financial Stability Analysis Division, where he oversaw thematic work for the IMF's Global Financial Stability Report. He has held a variety of other positions at the IMF, including as Resident Representative to Argentina and Uruguay.

His research includes work on capital flows, financial stability and monetary policy, and has been published widely in leading academic journals. Mr Gelos holds a PhD from Yale University and a Diplom from Bonn University, and is a CEPR Research Fellow. He will succeed Stijn Claessens, who has been Deputy Head of MED since 2018 and will retire from the BIS on 30 September 2023. The appointment is for a five-year term.

Gaston's extensive policy expertise and research will be highly valuable to the BIS and to the global central banking community as it tackles the significant challenges ahead. I look forward to working closely with him.
