Press release  |
30 March 2001

The Bank for International Settlements is pleased to announce its intention to establish a Representative Office for the Americas in Mexico City. The negotiations with the Mexican authorities on the necessary legal and administrative arrangements will commence in due course and the Office is scheduled to open by the end of the year. Following the opening of the Representative Office for Asia and the Pacific in 1998, this will be the Bank's second Representative Office outside its headquarters in Basel, Switzerland.

The Mexico Office will serve as a regional centre for the activities of the BIS in the Americas and will, in particular, aim to strengthen further the relations between the BIS and central banks and monetary authorities in the region.
