A conference on strengthening the banking system in China, organised jointly by the Bank for International Settlements and the People's Bank of China, was held in Beijing on 1 and 2 March 1999. The two days of discussion shed light on several major questions of both macroeconomic and supervisory policy. The papers in this publication analyse the many different issues that need to be faced in strengthening China's banking system.
