From efficiency to effectiveness: AI-augmented human expertise in central banks

The BIS Irving Fisher Committee on Central Bank Statistics (IFC) is pleased to announce its upcoming 5th workshop on "Data Science in Central Banking", co-hosted with the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT) and supported by the Bank of Italy (BoI).

The workshop will explore the applications and impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) across central banks' various functions and operations. Discussions will also address both realised and expected opportunities, as well as challenges in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, productivity, quality and governance.

This event aims to gather a diverse audience of practitioners, specialists and interested stakeholders from central banks, national statistical offices, international organisations and beyond.

The workshop will be held in person in Istanbul on 23-25 March 2027 with the option of virtual participation for non-presenters. The primary objective is to highlight ongoing projects and exchange experiences that can support in-house expertise while also enabling an adequate assessment of the benefits and risks linked to relying on external providers. Projects with replicable code that is open source or shareable will be particularly appreciated.

  • Applications of AI in central banking, including agents, generative, vision, speech and language models, especially showcasing enhancements in terms of productivity, operational efficiency and knowledge management to effectively support central banks in their various functions (policy-making, research, statistics, supervision, oversight, etc).

Other areas of interest

  • Data science for economic analysis, statistics and financial stability, including advanced methods and machine learning applications.
  • Technological and data solutions for developing, deploying and scaling AI in central banks, including (high-performance) compute platforms for large-scale analytics.
  • Information governance, management and standards in central banks, including adoption and implementation of standards - such as SDMx - as well as open data and technologies supporting data science, statistics and data sharing – such as SDMx.io.

Submission of papers / presentations

This call for submissions invites papers and presentations covering the areas of interest above, with a preference for the listed primary themes. Accepted submissions will be published in a special issue of the IFC Bulletin. Authors from central banks, national statistics offices, international organisations and other public sector entities, as well as from academia and the private sector, are encouraged to apply. To submit your contribution, please fill out this form by 30 November 2026. Authors of accepted contributions will be notified as soon as decisions are made and no later than 15 January 2027. Presentation slides are due by 28 February 2027.
