Economic Adviser and Head of Monetary and Economic Department
Hélène Rey became Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department on 1 September 2026. She is a member of the Bank’s Executive Committee.
Before joining the BIS, Ms Rey was the Lord Raj Bagri Professor of Economics at London Business School, a position to which she was appointed in 2016. Previously, she was Professor of Economics and International Affairs at Princeton University.
Ms Rey holds a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, as well as degrees from Stanford University and the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Économique. Her research focuses on the global financial cycle and exchange rates, financial crises and the organisation of the international monetary system. She is a Fellow of the British Academy, the Econometric Society and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in honour of her impactful work in the field of economics.
