Pablo Hernández de Cos - General Manager

Pablo Hernández de CosPablo Hernández de Cos assumed the role of General Manager of the BIS on 1 July 2025. He is a member of the Financial Stability Board and the Group of Central Bank Governors and Heads of Supervision.

Mr Hernández de Cos served as Governor of the Bank of Spain and member of the Governing Council of the European Central Bank from 2018 to 2024. From 2019 to 2024, he chaired the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and the Advisory Technical Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board.   

Mr Hernández de Cos began his career at the Bank of Spain in 1997, where he held various roles, including Director General Economics, Statistics and Research. He was a member of the European Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and Economic Policy Committee (CPE), and was chair of the Board of Governors of the Center for Latin American Monetary Studies and of the Eurosystem Working Group on Public Finances. He also served on the boards of the Center for Monetary and Financial Studies (CEMFI), the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (ICMB) and the Foundation for Applied Economic Studies (FEDEA). He was a Professor of Economics at IESE Business School and Adjunct Professor at University Carlos III of Madrid and fellow of the think tanks Bruegel and Peterson Institute for International Economics. His expertise spans macroeconomics, fiscal and monetary policy, and financial stability.

Mr Hernández de Cos holds a PhD in economics from the Complutense University of Madrid. He also has a degree in economics and business administration from CUNEF Universidad and a degree in law from the UNED.
