Introduction

It is an honour to be invited to deliver the Geary Lecture. Roy Geary played a critical role in the development of social science research in Ireland, both through his personal contributions and his leadership roles at the CSO and the ESRI. In addition, Roy Geary made a significant global contribution, both through his research and as head of the national accounts division of the UN Statistical Office during 1957–1960. Especially for later-stage researchers, it is also inspiring to know that many of his publications were written late in his career, with more than half published after his 65th birthday (Spencer 1993).
