Lars Rohde: Europe - an economic powerhouse in the future?

Speech by Mr Lars Rohde, Governor of the National Bank of Denmark, at the VL Summit, Copenhagen, 7 June 2018.

Thank you for inviting me to speak at this summit.

It is a great pleasure to have the chance to share my views on how to fos-ter sustainable growth in Europe.

The subject is more important than ever.

Let me start by emphasizing one thing: Despite imperfections - the Euro-pean Single Market has been an engine of growth.

It has acted as a catalyst for trade and the free exchange of labour, capi-tal and knowhow.

At a time when anti-globalization draws headlines, these fundamental rights should not be taken for granted.

In fact, I believe they are at the core for making Europe more prosperous in the future.
