Good afternoon

I welcome you all to the Bank of Mauritius on this special occasion marking its 50th Anniversary celebrations.

I am particularly delighted to welcome you to this newly constructed auditorium. In the central banking community, the first Governor of any central bank occupies a seat apart in its institutional memory. Mr Aunauth Beejadhur, a journalist and politician, exceptionally known for his intellectual and journalistic skills, was the first Governor of the Bank. He was entrusted in 1966 with the extremely delicate and demanding task of starting and building a central banking institution for the country before independence in 1968.
