pledge

The delivery of assets to secure the performance of an obligation by one party (the debtor, or pledgor) vis-à-vis another (the secured party or pledgee). For the secured party, a pledge creates a security interest in the assets delivered, while ownership of the assets remains with the debtor (however, in certain jurisdictions irregular pledge arrangements include the transfer of ownership).
