What we do
At the Bank for International Settlements, we occupy a distinct position among international financial institutions. As a meeting place for central bankers and financial regulators, the BIS is a forum for different points of view, blending varied perspectives into a greater collective understanding of the world's economy.
We act as a hub for issues that concern monetary policymakers and regulators, and respond nimbly to these concerns with relevant research and policy proposals. Through our work for central banks and supervisory authorities, we contribute to monetary and financial stability, which is essential for sustained economic growth.
Our wide-ranging activities include economic and policy research, statistical analysis, and banking. Our staff have expertise in finance, banking, risk management, international law, monetary and financial economics, and statistics, among other fields. Such diversity helps to create the right environment for knowledge-sharing and collaboration.
Our headquarters are in Basel, Switzerland, at Europe's geographical centre, with representative offices in Hong Kong SAR and Mexico City. With some 600 people from more than 60 countries, there are many and varied perspectives from which to learn.
