Tao Zhang - Chief Representative for Asia and the Pacific
Tao Zhang has been Chief Representative of the BIS office for Asia and the Pacific since September 2022. Prior to this, he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the People's Insurance Company (Group) of China. He has also served as Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington DC, in 2016–21, and as Deputy Governor of the People's Bank of China, in 2016.
Mr Zhang has extensive experience as a policymaker both in the international arena and at the national level in China. As the IMF's Deputy Managing Director, he oversaw the Fund's engagement with more than 100 member countries, with a portfolio that ranged from financial stability policies, fintech and digital currencies, climate change, sustainable growth and gender issues to engagement with other international and regional organisations.
Mr Zhang also held senior positions with the People's Bank of China, China's central bank, where he headed up various different departments. Earlier in his career, he worked as an economist at the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
Mr Zhang has a doctorate and a master's degree in International Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a bachelor's and a master's degree in science from Tsinghua University, China.
