Where perspectives meet

I joined the BIS Innovation Hub's (BISIH) Hong Kong Centre at the beginning of 2020. My start coincided with the onset of the global Covid pandemic, but luckily the BISIH was designed for such challenges, with two other centres in Basel and Singapore and several more centres coming live around the globe in the next two years. Given that our mission is to foster digital innovation and international collaboration in the central banking community, we were equipped from the outset with the tools and mindset that make it possible to collaborate across borders from anywhere.

One of the projects we have been working on in Hong Kong is digitising trade finance to make the often cumbersome processes more efficient and improve financial access for small and medium-sized firms. In close collaboration with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, we identified the most important pain points and ran a competition to address three issues. The 17 winners and runners-up of the TechChallenge showcased their technology solutions during the Hong Kong FinTech Week.

Hong Kong is a wonderful city, not least because of the contrasting experiences available in a limited space. The traditional Hong Kong and its architecture is just across the harbor from the bustling financial centre with its skyscrapers. You can spend the morning in one of the many shopping malls and the afternoon walking on one of the many hiking trails. Living on an outlying island means I can enjoy a spacious green environment with my family in one of the most densely populated places on earth. The BISIH office in Central Hong Kong is just a short ride away on the ferry.
