Position: Economist

I joined the BIS in December 2009. Previously, I worked for the IMF and earned a doctorate in economics at Princeton University. I also gained some banking experience before the doctorate. The BIS always seemed a great place to work, thanks to its unique focus and exposure to high-level meetings.

Here, I monitor emerging markets, focusing on Asian economies such as China and India. I write periodic monitoring notes for Bank management and meeting participants. I also draft background notes for various high-level meetings, including one for central bank deputy governors from emerging markets.

One recent interesting project was to assess whether supply or demand drove cross-border lending to emerging markets during the financial crisis. The paper appeared in the BIS Quarterly Review and was widely presented.

Perhaps my highest-profile independent research work has been the working paper on ageing and asset prices. This was quickly picked up by Reuters and featured in the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune, as well as newspapers in Australia, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. Quite a few asset and pension fund managers have asked me about it.

My work has attracted a lot of interest within the Bank and beyond. That's a good feeling!
