The Monetary and Economic Department (MED) analyses policy issues for the world's major central banks and financial regulators, organises discussions among central bank governors and other senior officials, and compiles and disseminates statistics. MED employs economists, statisticians, research analysts, business analysts and administrative assistants. Most posts are in Basel but some are based at our representative offices in Hong Kong and Mexico.
As an economist or research analyst in MED, you will analyse current economic and financial policy issues. You will set out key issues and provide new thinking on important topics facing central bank governors and other top-level decision-makers, who regularly meet at the BIS. Your involvement in policy debates ensures that your research is timely and relevant to senior policymakers.
You also contribute to policy discussions through publications and participation in conferences. BIS publications attract a worldwide audience of policymakers, academics and market participants. The Annual Report offers a succinct picture of key global economic and financial issues. The BIS Quarterly Review publishes articles on financial and macroeconomic topics. More research finds its way to academic journals and collected volumes through presentations at research conferences and the BIS Working Paper series.
BIS economists are closely involved in the supervisory reform process. Many of the bodies responsible for designing the regulatory framework of tomorrow are based in Basel, at the BIS. Examples are the Financial Stability Board, the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and central bank committees concerned with financial markets and payment systems. BIS economists actively participate in the work of the committees and their working groups.
As a statistician, you will keep up to date on international statistical standards and help to collect and disseminate international financial statistics. The international banking statistics are a unique source of insight into the activities of international banks. Other datasets compiled by the BIS cover derivatives, the securities markets and the foreign exchange market. As a research analyst, you will collaborate with MED's economists and, in particular, provide them with statistical support. As a business analyst and administrator, you are responsible for the IT applications and the logistics that are needed to support this work.
The Bank for International Settlements invites project proposals from academics for its Research Fellowship programme. Fellowships will be awarded to scholars who have established a strong reputation in their field.
