Biographical note: Gunter D Baer, former Secretary General

Gunter D Baer was Secretary General of the Bank for International Settlements from 1 September 1994 until 31 December 2004.

Prior to this, Mr Baer was acting Director General of the European Monetary Institute. From 1990 to 1993, he held the position of Secretary General of the Committee of Governors of the EEC central banks.

Earlier in his career, Mr Baer worked as an economist for the International Monetary Fund, the German Ministry of Finance and the Bank for International Settlements.

Mr Baer was educated at Johannes-Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and spent a year as a research fellow at Princeton University.

Mr Baer was born in 1941.
